history
If you want French history, Wikipedia has a wealth of it. France's past is messy, either way. His childhood was kind of spent being idealized as a central hub for culture and trends. In other words, he became the high maintenance, snobbish brat he is today very early on in life. Things weren't just silk tunics and long flowing hair befitting of nobility. There were wars and famine, hardships and loss. Most of the people he calls friends have a foot-mark detailing centuries of complications. As a nation, he can be friends with a nation one decade and enemies the next. Rinse and repeat.
Some complications include: The American Revolution (where he had a vendetta with England yet again and snatched America away from the Crown), The French Revolution (and the Reign of Terror, good Lord, all neatly encapsulated a time where Europe tried to collectively pull away from France's ever-present influence. Royalty. Super big in Europe back then), and Return of the Jed—Emperor: Napoleon literally makes France an intimidating dude (and so well-dressed).
Now he's just the EU's best wine mom.
personality
In A Nutshell
A confident, sociable proxy for nation-kind vs A stubborn, petty, and gratuitous old fart.
This should be fun.
On one hand, France does have a wealth of good qualities. He is immensely proud of the nation he has become even though the journey to this point hasn't been an easy one. He is incredibly faithful to his citizens and their hardships, shown in strips depicting the Revolution where he tells his fellow peers that he is nothing without his people. Often, he is depicted as being out in public conversing openly with his citizens, showing a continued fidelity to them. That sense of kinship extends to nations as well, some of which he openly encourages to refer to him as their big brother. Sometimes it actually works, too! France is shown to be quite sentimental, sometimes to the point of pining while sitting back and watching young families walking in the streets of Paris.
He's the perfect example of the type to be noticed the moment they enter the room. He carries himself with a certain eloquence and grace. France seems to be the type that thrives in a group setting where he can both showcase his talents as a natural host and socialize in general. He has a difficult time finding a stranger in the room and his communication skills fall into two categories: Flirting and boasting, both of which fall under his gratuitous nature. He does not shy away when he finds something or someone beautiful, and he finds many, many things beautiful. He does not cut corners in how he addresses any interest which has earned him quite the reputation among his peers as being an insufferable player. While he is indeed a rather free spirit, it should be noted that he is not the kind of man to overstep the comfort of someone he is pursuing. After all, he is the nation of love and prides himself as being a thoughtful partner, not an intimidating one.
Speaking of knowing when he's in a room, France is quite opinionated. He's the kind of guy that will argue on why the sky is blue until it's dusk and the original thought spurring the debate has long since been forgotten. It's the mark of a great mind rather than a pointless circular argument from a stubborn old man that refuses to shut up! He wants to be heard the moment he has something to say but that doesn't stop him from criticizing those that butt into conversations. Some people put in their two cents. France puts in the entire dollar. Euro. Whatever.
He is openly critical of many things and tends to overreact when he is taken by surprise or feels like he's been wronged in some way. At times he holds grudges and brings up past offenses simply to argue, rather than finding closure. You have to wonder if it's him liking the sound of his own voice (which would NOT be a surprise) or simply finding pleasure in getting the last word in. Is it petty to argue over the past? Sure. Does France seem to show signs of repenting for his superficial ways? Not often, but sometimes. He is not heartless.
He's a passionate man. It's why he conducts himself as he does – sometimes loud and unapologetic, other times thoughtfully and subdued. He takes his duty as a nation seriously and puts a great deal of effort into continuing to strive for the benefit of his people.

Immortality
Or rather, perceived immortality. A nation's vitality is heavily influenced by several things: its citizens, government, and economy. Nations that have issues with their economies are seen to have sickly moments, as an example. The big thing is their people; if their allegiance is firm to their homeland said homeland pushes on. France seems to be doing quite well for being as old as he is.Healing
Superficial wounds are not long-lasting for nations. Get bruised falling off a ladder? No big deal. Break a leg while falling off said ladder? There are worse things. They bruise, break, and heal relatively quickly. Wounds that would normally put out a human are certainly inconvenient, but not the end. Or The End. Russia is seen to be able to remove his heart. Kinda vital, but Hetalia magic! Lasting wounds seem to be tied to historical happenings: war, famine, government scuffles--that whole lot.Weaponry/Combat
This asshole used to be an empire before he decided to play mom to the EU. While he isn't as strong physically as he was back then, he still is surprisingly strong. Growing up, he spent a lot of time fighting, so he is skilled with various weapons: sword, bow, rifle.
